How to Pray in Unity

For the entire month of July through my Muses of a Mom Facebook page, the entire community of girlfriends are praying for each other! It has been exciting to see the fulfillment of one of the teaching of Jesus from Matthew 18:20 (NIV) :

“For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.”

This is a popular verse on prayer, and we know it to mean that if we gather in a small group, God will be there with us and hear us.

#truth.

But there is so much more here that is promised by Jesus.

“For where two or three gather”

In Matthew 18:20, Jesus was teaching his followers that it wasn’t a specific number who had to gather together. It is about unity. If only two are united before God, they will not be alone. There is emphasis here on the “union” of prayer.  We do not just agree to come and pray together, but to pray in unity, or “concert” -- for a definite thing or purpose. (1)   Praying with unity shows our common relationship with God as his people.

“in my name”

Not only are we asked by Jesus to come together in unity when we pray, but to pray with authority in our Father’s name, acting on his behalf in his church(2) (or fellow believers). John 16:23 quotes Jesus telling his disciples that Very truly I tell you, my Father will give you whatever you ask in my name. Why wouldn't you want to come together and pray in unity when we have His authority?  (See also John 14:14)

“there am I with them”

Read it again.

There am I.

Powerful. Majestic. Royal.  He is the great “I AM”. We are to simply come together in unity and purpose, pray with authority in His name, and He will be there among us.  Although our Heavenly Father is everywhere and in all places, this is a promise of God’s special presence.(3)  He is Emmanuel.  God with us.

This is the purpose of  July's #prayertag - to come together in unity (through the Internet), with a definite purpose (praying for our girlfriends) in His name.  Although we may be across the United States, North America or the World, you can be assured that when we pray together for our girlfriends this month, we are giving Him an invitation to show His presence.

And He will.
